I think environmental portraiture is so effective and beautiful in our efforts to remember someone through a photograph.

The images above are from my Grandparent’s home (my Mother’s Side).

The first one of my Grandfather is my favorite picture I’ve taken, to date.

It’s always a pleasure for me to take someone’s portrait. However, I become excited on a different level when I am invited into a workplace, personal space, or even an public place that holds value or history to the person I’m photographing.

Personal spaces and interiors are interesting and lovely to me. Some are filled with many details and physical items, and some, very minimal. Either way, they set the tone for an image and the subject is comfortable..well, yes, comfortable, but more so they have the tendency to be more natural which allows me to capture their personality, feelings, or habits that are unique to them.

Again, I really enjoy digesting interiors. I like to converse with the subject on anything that captures my attention within the space. I love the stories or comments I get in return.

Fulfilling my true enjoyment of creating environmental portraiture has really just begun. I feel I’ve been able to place myself in some unique environments thus far, but I want to grow and share many more faces, stories, and places that you may not get to see otherwise.

I really wanted this post to have a good mixture of images to show how my interest in environmental portraiture is not just evident in my fine art work, but within my business sessions as well. I truly believe much of what I learned while an fine art student (Ha, well I still feel like I am!), has been so useful, no matter what I am photographing.

I’ve really been digging this quote lately by Ernst Haas :

“I am not interested in shooting new things - I am interested to see things new.”
